France's pharmaceutical industry France is a global leader in the pharmaceutical industry, recognized internationally for its skilled researchers and capacity for innovation. This Special Report gives an overview of the sector in France (date of release — July 2007). Research in life sciences is currently booming, driven by cross partnerships between some of the world’s best laboratories and biotechnology companies — such as Sanofi-Aventis, GSK, Pierre Fabre, and Pfizer, among others — which are all doing business in France. Overall, the French pharmaceutical market is ranked 3rd in the world and 1st in Europe, with industry turnover of €42 billion in 2006. France is also Europe ’s top producer of pharmaceutical drugs (4^th worldwide), with 330 companies developing, researching and manufacturing medications. Some €4 billion is invested annually in research for new medicinal products in France. In total, the French pharmaceutical industry employs over 100,000 people, with 22,000 involved in R&D alone. *L'industrie pharmaceutique française* La France est un pays leader en ce qui concerne l’industrie pharmaceutique ; la qualité de ses chercheurs et la capacité du pays à innover ne sont plus à démontrer. France's pharmaceutical industry (document PDF - 190 Ko ) 2006 Report on Foreign Direct Investment in France The 2006 Review of international investment and resulting job creation, which is compiled by the Invest in France Agency and its regional partners, confirms France as a prime location for foreign investors in Europe. For the fourth year running, the number of jobs being created or maintained has increased, reaching the record level of 39,998, which is an increase of 32.7% compared to 2005 (30,146). The number of investment projects also increased slightly: up 2.3% compared to last year.
